Fifth Day of Peace

Based on a true story, at the end of WW II, two German deserters are tried for desertion by fellow POWs inside a Canadian-run prisoner of war camp for Nazis. Immediately after the end of World War II, disillusioned, idle German soldiers wander around the ruined countryside of Italy. Two of these men are rounded up by their former comrades, their superiors, and charged by the SS with desertion.

Senior German officer Von Bliecher leads the charge of cowardice, and convinces the Canadian camp commandant to allow the execution, with the Germans using guns and ammunition to carry out the sentence. Despite an Allied agreement that the Germans are no longer allowed to conduct military trials, the two soldiers are sentenced to death by firing squad.

Bruno Dorfer and machinist's mate Rainer Beck, are executed for desertion on May 13, 1945, found guilty by their fellow German soldiers.

The execution was carried out by German POWs who were under Canadian command. They are sentenced on the fifth day of peace.
